Moderate Science
Wanna know a secret?
Most recording sessions are more tedious and more expensive than they need to be.
And they're done like that on purpose.
How could that be? Well, music nowadays is often recorded one musician at a time, one part at a time.
But why?
It's actually not because nobody knows what they're doing. No: usually it's because of fear.
Most sessions strive for "perfect" takes. But music is recorded by people, and people aren't perfect. So we get afraid, and we isolate and control as much as possible, for takes that can be assembled later so they're "perfect." We approach it like science, because we are afraid we might miss out on perfection.
But how often does a band perform like that? Great songs are enhanced by great musicians working together: a great performance is more than the sum of its parts.
Admittedly, there is a moderate amount of science in a studio. And even the tightest bands can benefit from an occasional overdub.
Let the engineers worry about the science. Let the artists focus on their art. Let's record like we perform. It's way more fun. It's way more satisfying. (It's way cheaper.)
Got a song to record? Let's be bold about it. I can handle the science: you take care of the art.
